Cottage Pie

Ingredients

  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 5ml crushed garlic
  • 500g lean beef mince
  • 5 carrots, diced
  • 5 celery sticks, finely chopped
  • 250g lean bits of bacon
  • 80 ml tomato sauce
  • 250ml vegetable stock
  • 125ml red wine
  • 2 tsp cake flour
  • 6 large potatoes, peeled
  • Knob of butter
  • 60ml milk

    Method

    1. Preheat the oven to 200⁰C.
    2. In a pan over moderate heat add the onions & garlic. Saute until translucent.
    3. Add the mince and stir until cooked through. Add the vegetables & bacon.
    4. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    5. Stir in the tomato sauce, stock, and wine, and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Sprinkle over the flour and stir.
    6. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into chunks.
    7. Boil in salted water until soft. Drain and mash with a knob of butter and the milk.
    8. Spoon the meat mixture into a rectangular ovenproof dish. Spoon the mash on top.
    9. Bake for 30 minutes.
