Cottage Pie
Ingredients
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 5ml crushed garlic
- 500g lean beef mince
- 5 carrots, diced
- 5 celery sticks, finely chopped
- 250g lean bits of bacon
- 80 ml tomato sauce
- 250ml vegetable stock
- 125ml red wine
- 2 tsp cake flour
- 6 large potatoes, peeled
- Knob of butter
- 60ml milk
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200⁰C.
- In a pan over moderate heat add the onions & garlic. Saute until translucent.
- Add the mince and stir until cooked through. Add the vegetables & bacon.
- Cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, stock, and wine, and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Sprinkle over the flour and stir.
- Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into chunks.
- Boil in salted water until soft. Drain and mash with a knob of butter and the milk.
- Spoon the meat mixture into a rectangular ovenproof dish. Spoon the mash on top.
- Bake for 30 minutes.
